A Voluntary AI Accord at the White House: Independent Audits Are Now Expected — Are Enterprises Ready?
Following the reports of rogue agents, the White House signed a voluntary safety accord with major AI companies. President Trump called the agreement 'morally binding' and said he will appoint an adviser to oversee it.
What the accord calls for
- Signatories include OpenAI, Google, Meta, Anthropic, Nvidia and xAI.
- Companies will put robust internal controls in place for safe AI development.
- An independent external auditor will assess whether those controls are working.
- Each company will set up a committee on its board of directors to review internal and external audit reports.
Its limits
The accord has no enforcement mechanism. Companies aren't required to name their auditors or publish the findings; choosing the auditor and fixing any gaps remain up to the companies themselves. In other words, this isn't a law, but the announcement of an expectation.
Why it matters for enterprises
Once the major model providers accept outside audits, the same question travels down the chain. Customers, regulators and boards start asking companies that use AI, 'what are your controls, and can you prove them?' The way to be ready is to already be keeping the evidence an auditor would look for.
Four kinds of evidence an auditor will ask for
- A current inventory of the AI systems and agents in use.
- Written rules for each system: what data it can access and what actions it can take.
- Records showing the rules are actually enforced: calls, blocked requests, approvals.
- An incident process: who does what, and how quickly, when a problem is detected.
The remot angle
remot makes most of the evidence an auditor will want a natural by-product of day-to-day operation: every model and agent call is logged, policies are defined and enforced in one place, and blocked or approval-gated requests are traceable. That way an audit runs on records that already exist rather than on documents gathered after the fact.
